Most 20-somethings, and most people for that matter, are quite familiar with IKEA. Chances are they own a piece or two of IKEA furniture if they are lucky enough to live near a store. The prices, variations in size of furniture, and well, the fact that it’s just fun to walk through the massive stores are all reasons I love IKEA. That being said, A LOT of people own the exact same IKEA pieces, and it gets pretty boring and easy to spot in other people’s houses. To be honest, our whole apartment is IKEA furniture except for a few pieces. I was bored with our HEMNES dresser, but I still like the color and the size is perfect for our stuff (my husband gets half of the drawers and I get the other half) so I did not want to get a different dresser, but I wanted to give it a different look. The easiest thing to change on a dresser are the drawer pulls/knobs if you don’t want to, or can’t afford to replace the whole thing. Changing the knobs can give a dresser a totally different and refreshed look, so that is what I did. I found some pulls at Cost Plus World Market months and months ago that I loved, but put off purchasing them. My husband and I ended up in San Francisco one day and I stumbled into an Anthropologie, and let me tell you, it was life changing! I have seen their #anthrofave hashtag all over Instagram and I have used some of their pieces in houses I have staged, but I had never been into an actual store myself. I ended up skimming past all of the clothes and landed in the homewares department. There I found the buckets with all sorts of hand painted, unique drawer pulls and I was sold.
We decided to go with these knobs, which are a nautical compass theme. It fits our other nautical decor, and the fact that my husband works on a ship makes them more personal to us. These knobs were not cheap at $8 a piece, and cost around $100 total, but it was cheaper than a new dresser all together. Plus it made it look more custom and less IKEA, which is great!
P.S. We have moved 3 times since purchasing our dresser so it is a little beat up. 🙂
My husband and I are totally smitten with our new knobs, and we love the way it personalized our HEMNES dresser!
